Robert Plant生於1948年八月二十日，出生地在英國的Staffordshire，他很早就對音樂有極大的興趣，十五歲那年就已經在俱樂部演唱，他當時學習美國一些知名的藍調歌手唱腔，如Robert Johnson， Otis Rush， Buddy Guy， Muddy Waters等人，至於搖滾樂方面，影響他最深的是貓王Elvis Presley和Gene Vincent。
在六零年代， Robert Plant組過不少樂團，包括The Crawling King Snakes， Listen， Hobbstweedle，以及與Led Zeppelin的鼓手John Bonham合組的The Band of Joy等等，那時候的曲風是偏重節奏藍調，1967年間，他曾出過個人專輯，不過那時他的潛能還未完全激發出來，1968年，Robert Plant加入Led Zeppelin，並推薦好友John Bonham一起進到Led
